Stop by May 24 for an Author Interview

Stop by May 30 for a Teaser

Normally, I try to do an introduction, but C.A. Kunz gives one far better than I could possibly. So  I’ll just let them have at it. :)

Hello Blogosphere,

First of all we want to thank Reena Jacobs for allowing us to infiltrate her blog and plant this little number on here! So, I guess a little introduction is in order here. Well we are Carol Kunz and Adam Kunz, the mother and son author duo known as C.A. Kunz. Our debut YA Paranormal/Fantasy novel, The Childe, was published back in February of this year, and is the first book in a planned five book series. The Childe introduces the reader to our main character Catherine Colvin, AKA Cat, a fifteen-year-old girl entering her freshman year at Astoria High School. Like everyone else, she has her typical high school drama like a mean-spirited math teacher, a Goth clique that seems to dislike her instantly, and a popular trio, known as the Trifecta, who wants to be her to be their BFF. Unbeknownst to Cat though, she is also metamorphosing into the Childe, which only adds more complications to her list.

A Little Bit More About Us:

A total love of all things supernatural is what inspired this fifty-four year young mom and her twenty-six year old son to put this story on paper.

Carol Kunz was born in New Ferry, England. Her interest in the supernatural was first sparked upon meeting a ghost at the age of eight. As a teenager, she was always fascinated by the mythology behind vampires, werewolves and witches. Being an avid reader, Carol finds it easy to spend several hours wrapped up in a great fantasy novel.

Adam Kunz was born in Newport News, Virginia. Growing up, he was a huge fan of creature features and books about things that go bump in the night. When he is not busy writing, Adam enjoys his job at a certain theme park in Orlando, Florida as a décor consultant. This job brings him face to face with all sorts of nightmarish creatures, especially when he decorates the haunted houses for the park’s annual Halloween event.

Now, Onto The Meat And Potatoes Of Our Guest Blog Post! We’re Going To Spill Some Tea (Gossip and Details) About Our Writing Journey Together As A Mother And Son Author Duo. So, Without Further Ado…Consider Our Tea Spilt:

Carol: We started our adventure back in March of 2009, when Adam called me and said we were going to write a book together. Adam knew that my dream of writing a novel was something I had often talked about, but always put on the back burner as my ‘someday project’.

Adam: I knew my mom had this dream, and I wanted to write a story that I had already vaguely outlined. When I called her, I had decided that I wasn’t going to take no for an answer, and to my surprise she immediately said yes. I sent an email that night to her with the story idea and a rough outline. Then as she began writing down her own ideas, adding to my outline, and our story The Childe was born.

Carol: Our initial outline was only thirteen chapters. We agreed to each do six chapters, (alternating every two chapters) and then work on the last one together. Our first rough draft was 194 pages. Recently, I perused our first draft, and boy was it ROUGH!

Adam: Our first get-together, after finishing our six chapters each, lasted a whole week while I was off from work. We added, changed, disagreed, agreed, and then added some more. It was definitely an experience neither one of us had ever experienced. We ended the week with more notes of what we needed to do to improve our chapters, and then spent the next few months doing just that.

Carol: We had numerous mini meetings over many weekends, where we were holed up in my spare room (office), being fed by my wonderful hubby, and Adam’s awesome dad, Bob. Bob is also our brilliant illustrator. Stephanie, our daughter, was the first illustrator, but she moved and it was really difficult being so far apart. Then Bob stepped in and took over with a talent that Adam and I didn’t even know existed in him.

Adam: Yeah, good old Dad stepped in and saved the day, or days, as it were. Over those few months we worked very hard, calling each other everyday (thank goodness we have an unlimited family phone plan, haha). We finally (and I do mean finally) finished our novel in about nine months, and then shipped it off to one of our many editors/critics. We had a total of four people help us with this phase, and they were such a help indeed. Amanda Lynch, Charlie Steffy, Tim Coleman, and good old Dad, all gave us their honest opinions and much needed critiques.

Carol: Finally Adam was ready to format and publish our novel. The day he received the first proof he called me and told me how awesome it looked. He lives about 45 minutes away from us, and when he said he couldn’t bring it until the weekend, I almost had a meltdown. So jealous was I that he could hold our accomplishment, but I had to wait.  Now is the time I tell you that I have a very caring and loving son. One that wouldn’t dream of letting his mom wait a couple of days to see our creation. He tried to sneak into our house that evening, which is a little hard to do because of our three noisy, four legged babies (dogs), and brought me the book. I walked around with it all night, and it even laid next to my pillow that night while I slept. I couldn’t believe I had finally held my dream in my hands. Next to having my children, this was one of the best days of my life. Oops, sorry, have to mention marrying the hubby 35 years ago, don’t want him to think it wasn’t one of the best days of my life.

Adam: Yes, mom’s right, it’s practically impossible to sneak into their house with those four-legged alarms going off. I loved watching the joy on my mom’s face when she held our book in her hands, as both of us chanted ‘we wrote a book’. We’ve come a long way from March of 2009. We actually started working on the second book in The Childe series about five months ago, and now it’s been in the hands of our editing team for a few weeks now, so it will probably be published within the next couple of months or so. Also, I am working with my friend (an engineer and aspiring musician), Lee Wilson, on putting together a companion soundtrack for our series. Volume one of the soundtrack spans the first two books in The Childe series, and will contain 11 (or more) full length songs. The songs have full lyrics and were inspired by the words of the novels. They span several genres from pop, rock, r&b, punk, classical, and country. The Childe companion soundtrack will be available soon.

Thinking Of Writing Your Own Story…Well, Here Are Some Encouraging Words That Helped Us Get Through Our Tough Times:

If you have a story to tell, believe in it, and write it down. There will always be people who are critical of your work, listen, if it makes sense, learn from them.  If you are rejected, do not become disheartened! It only takes one person to accept your work. Remember, there are people who have been rejected numerous times, but persevered, and are now read worldwide.  Live your dream! Believe in your story and in yourself, you can make it happen!

As soon as I saw the first ereader with eink, I told my husband the ereader was about to revolutionize the way we read. The E Ink was so close to paper, and the ability to carry so many books was too convenient to be discounted. I realized, right then, we were about to see a big change in the way books are published. I knew that large publishing houses had lost control—and that authors were now in position to take control of their writing.

I never realized just how fast this would come about. Suddenly, many authors were taking control of their product. And why not, authors can now control what they write, what their book cover looks like, and what blurb is written on the backs of their books. I use to listen to many frustrated authors talk about the cover not matching their story, wrong color of hair, wrong kind of blurb, etc.

Other benefits became apparent as time went on. Large publishing companies will only work with a book they feel will sell on a mass market basis. Bookstores will place your book on the shelf for a short time. The entire time, the author is still marketing their own book, but now, they’ve lost the ability to continue to market it, because the contract is exclusive.

Don’t get me wrong. There are some benefits too. The author who goes through a traditional publisher will have their book professionally edited, and if they make it, they will become household name. But they’re going to work for it.

When the author remains independent, they work harder for it. There are some doors that traditional publishers open, which are still closed to the Independent author. But they will keep the control over their product. And I am finding ways around some of these closed doors. But it’s going to be a long hard road before the way is paved for the Independent author.

I believe we are building a voice. And as we continue to band together, our voice is getting louder. Many doors that were closed are now opening. Many authors are working together to help each other. By working together, we build a united front.

I have been inspired by Indie authors. When I started Triquetra Press Publications, I wanted to have a site that encouraged authors to work together, but it’s been a process of evolution. It took me months to recognize the benefits of Goodreads, and months more to recognize that placing your blogs on Google Blogs can greatly increase followers reaching your websites. These are the types of things that are becoming better organized so that independent authors who follow will not have to stumble around in the dark trying to find their way My sites, and many like them, are turning into stepping stones. I encourage us all to work together, because as Heresh has said so many times on Goodreads, when we work together, we all gain.

I have been amazed and inspired by the way Indie authors work together. Fox News talked about this difference when they mentioned how Indie authors band together, helping one another, instead of being in competition with one another.

As I mentioned before, my sites are a process of evolution. As I learn, I discard things that haven’t worked and work on the things that do work. This month I started listing a different Independent author every day. I encourage Independent authors to start contacting me to guest blog and interview. I’m finding new ways to bring people to my sites every single day. I’m excited and encouraged by the changes. I know we have a long way to go—but we have come amazingly far in a very short time.

I’m your guinea pig.

If you’ve visited my blog or website over the past week, you’ll know I’m working to launch a Kickstarter project. So here’s what I’m thinking. My creative buddies might like regular updates on the successes and (hopefully not) failures. That way, if you decide to launch a Kickstarter project, perhaps my experience will help you. :)

One or two updates a week should keep my readership in the know without driving them away. So we’ve got Working  Wednesday where I do my regularly weekly updates. Starting next week, I’ll add the Kickstarter goal to the list.

Then we have one of two options:

Friday Authors Helping Authors: Okay. This feature has had a dry spell lately. The novelty has faded, authors asking to post have dwindled, and I’ve done nothing to revive it. Like today, I’ll work to fill the Authors Helping Authors feature since this definitely fits under the category. If an author comes to me requesting to do a Friday post, I’ll definitely open the day up to them first. I’m sure you’d rather listen to someone else share their experience than me ramble about a 30-day project. :)

Second option is to do a Saturday Special Post. I have absolutely no feature on this day. Although, I’m liking the name Saturday Special. Has a nice ring to it, yes? There. I just added that to my categories. Not sure what I plan to do with it, but it’s there now. Perhaps I’ll use it for New and Upcoming releases. Yes. That sounds wonderful. So if you have a release, let me know (ReenaJacobs at ReenaJacobs dot com) Tell me which Saturday you’d like it posted, but make sure the release date is within a week of the Saturday. Include your website, the release date, the buy link(s), an online link where I can find a picture of the cover art, and a link where I can find the blurb. If you have any discounts you’re planning for your release, definitely include that information. That’ll make the Saturday Special all the more special. Sound good? Great!

Back to the regularly scheduled program… Kickstarter. So we have one or two updates happening.

Now to share with you my first set back. What?!!? The campaign hasn’t even started and you’re already talking setbacks? Yeah.

Apparently, Kickstarter campaigns require you to have an Amazon business account… or something like that. I knew that. However, I figured I’d get to it at the last moment. Well, I did. The thing is, there is an account verification process which goes along with this. After all is said and done, it can take anywhere from 5-7 days. Bummer. Let’s hope it doesn’t. With that in mind, I’m already thinking of extending the tentative end date from Saturday, July 18 to Saturday, July 25 or even the beginning of August, Saturday, August 2. We’ll see. I really want to get those 30 days in.

Other than that, this week has gone very well. I’ve been hella busy trying to get videos for I Loved You First finished. They aren’t the greatest, but this little amateur put a little something together.

Today, I present to you the Kickstarter video.

So anyway, I’ve run out of Author Helping Author volunteers. I knew it’d happen sooner or later. Oh well, life goes on. Guess what that means? This Friday is open… for me! Muhahaha. You get to listen to me ramble.

Actually, I’m  just soliciting advice. So you all are safe… for now. >:)

I’m eager to do a giveaway, but I want more than a couple of entries, as sometimes happens. In the past, I’ve had success with Goodreads giveaways and doing giveaways by participating in blog hops (for example, blogomania, blogfest). Lately I’ve been wanting to try a twitter giveaway.

Anyone have success doing one of these? And if so, how did you track it? How long did the giveaway run? Did you find it successful?

This inquiring mind wants to know.

So you’re giving me a little info; I’m giving back to you.

Way back when, when I ran my first giveaway, I hadn’t a clue on how to track the entries a blog giveaway. One of my twitter buddies turned me to Google Docs. If you look back through some of my giveaways, you’ll notice I request folks to fill out a form. Google Docs, baby. I embed the form into the post, and the complete entries go to a spreadsheet. If you’re familiar with formulas, an import into Excel makes it pretty easy to generate “ticket” numbers.

And I’d be amiss not to share with you random.org. Once you have a number for all the entries, plug in the range and let it choose a winner.

Okay… now your turn! Share with me. Info about twitter giveaways or other giveaways you’ve had success with. :D

Would it be bad to do an infomercial here? Amazon is doing a promotion for both my listings there. Shadow Cat is 1/2 off and Control Freak: Brandon’s Story is free at the US site and UK site.
